If you prefer the style of the Bubble Base Bong, select one that has a wide flat bottom and a shorter neck; this will ensure a better center of gravity.
The Straight Tube bong, in my opinion, is the sweet-spot for all levels of smokers. The long straight tube is secured with a wide base for stability. They’re easier to pass in group sessions, and depending on the thickness of the glass, they can be quite durable. The Straight Tube waterpipe usually features an interchangeable downstem and bowl, which can be easily upgraded with Ashcatchers, Quartz Nails, Titanium Nails, Percolators, etc… If you are just starting out, or looking for a good daily driver, a Straight Tube Bong may be the one for you.
The Gravity Bong, a.k.a. Grav, a.k.a. Ghetto Bong is like a science experiment gone bad-ass! In my college years, I would make these from plastic soda bottles and 5-gallon buckets. I’m much older now, so I’m stoked brands like GRAV make a presentable piece that I can share with my friends. The Gravity Bong will typically be 2 separate containers; one filled with water, and the other with a bowl over the mouth piece. The container with the mouth piece is inserted into the container with the water. Once the herb is ignited, the container with the herb is slowly pulled up from the water, causing a vacuum for the smoke. Ensuring the container is not completely out of the water, you first remove the bowl and herb, then place your mouth around the opening, and inhale while pushing the container back into the water. Silicone bongs are a new player in the game. There are several benefits to silicone over glass; Durability, price, and they are extremely easy-to-clean. Glass Bongs can come in a variety of thickness and quality. The raw materials used in glass production can impact the durability and quality of your bong. Higher-end bongs will typically use the phrase, “Borosilicate Glass.” Borosilicate Glass is made from silica and boron trioxide, which has a higher resistance to heat stress. This type of glass is commonly used by well-known brands and are more expensive than the bongs found at your local convenient store.
Thick Glass Bongs typically refer to 9mm glass bongs. The tubing used to make the bongs have a 9mm thick wall. These 9mm bongs are more durable than the standard 5mm and 7mm waterpipes. Downstems come in several standard joint sizes, 10mm, 14mm and 18mm. Some bongs will have a removable downstem that is submerged in the base of the pipe. The downstem will usually have slits or holes that allow the smoke to percolate as it leaves the water. Bongs that do not have a removable downstem will usually have an internal percolator.
